The Hagerty Wrestling Report (11.25.13): Deltona Duals Recap

While the team finished 0-5 at last weekend’s Deltona Duals, there were a ton of bright spots. We entered the tournament with only 11 of the weight classes filled  (we were missing 106, 152, & HWT) and ended up having to forfeit 195 due to injury during the last two duals. Spotting the other team 24 points right off the bat is a tough hill to climb, but our wrestlers battled tough and made the most out of a tough situation. We started 5 first year wrestlers in our varsity lineup with 4 of them being freshmen. The experience they gained wrestling at the varsity level gave them a glimpse of the caliber of wrestling they will see in the future and what it will take to eventually reach that level. The team showed great resolve and won a majority of the matches head to head.

Timber Creek 66 Hagerty 10

Zach Larison (126) defeats Estrada by decision 10-4, Derek Di Bernardo (170) won another decision 9-3, and Dan Reilly (113) earned a major decision 13-3 for the Huskies.

Deltona 51 Hagerty 25

Zach Larison earned a decision 5-4, Scooter Duren (160) pinned his opponent for his first varsity win of the season, Derek DiBernardo also won by pin, and Luke Franco (113) earned a major decision, 21-7. Will Searcy picked up a victory by forfeit.

Forest 36 Hagerty 35

Despite winning 7 out of 11 matches, giving up 18 points in forfeits and giving up another 18 points in pins hurt us. Matt Ellis, Derek DiBernardo, Dan Reilly, and Zach Larison all picked up pins, while Scooter Duren teched his opponent 15-0. Will Searcy won by decision 8-7 as well as Luke Franco, 12-10.

Yulee 42 Hagerty 32

Of the ten bouts, the Huskies won 6. We injury defaulted at 195 lbs. and were forced to spot Yulee 24 points. However, Derek Dibernardo, Will Searcy, Dan Reilly, and Matt Ellis all pinned their opponents in the first period while Dan Reilly and Luke Franco both picked up wins by decision.  Zach Larison teched his opponent 16 to score the remaining 5 team points.

Deland 48 Hagerty 19

We split the matches with Deland 5-5. Derek DiBernardo, Dan Reilly, Luke Franco, and Zach Larison all earned major decisions (16-4, 11-0, 16-5, and 13-2, respectively). Will Searcy won his fourth match of the day with an overtime victory, 7-5.
