The Hagerty Wrestling Report (03.01.15)

Team scores

Team places 3rd at 3A District 3 Tournament, qualifies 9 to Regional

Nine out of our thirteen wrestlers placed in the top four of their respective weight class this past Saturday, which means that they will move on to next weekend’s Regional Tournament. To score as many points as we did in a district that has always been traditionally tough may have been a surprise to those on the outside looking in, but if you have been in our practice room the last several weeks you would have seen a group of focused young men who made the decision to choose victory.

A huge thanks to everyone involved in hosting the District Tournament: our administration, athletic department, tech support, and local community businesses all contributed to making sure we had everything we needed to run this tournament. To all of our parents who volunteered their time running computers, working in the concession stand, and providing items for the coaches and officials’ hospitality room: THANK YOU! Another thanks goes out our JV wrestlers and teams who provided table workers. The wonderful support system here at Hagerty made this tournament another successful one, and if I didn’t get a chance to personally thank you yesterday, let me say it here: “Thank you!”

District Tournament Information

Fans,

FINALLY, after a long, extended season, the “REAL” wrestling season is upon us! We are honored to be given the opportunity to host the Class 3A District 3 Tournament for the second year in a row.

On Friday, Feb. 27th we will set up the gym immediately after school in preparation for the District Tournament. Following the set-up of the gym we will have a short practice. Set-up should not take more than 1 hour, and practice will end at 5:00 PM.

Saturday, Feb. 28th: District Tournament:

Schedule:

7:00 AM: Wrestlers report for weight-check and final gym-setup

8:00 AM: Weigh-ins

10:00 AM: Round 1

Thank you so much to Dale Di Bernardo, Ken Larison, and Curtis Duren for their help with the administration of the tournament. As much as I’d like to think of myself as being technologically proficient, those old dogs learned some new tricks and their knowledge of trackwrestling.com and running the logistical side of the tournament is above and beyond what I could manage. Also Ana Larison and Tammy Di Bernardo’s help with coordinating the Concession Stand & Hospitality Room has been HUGE! Mrs. Larison has been shaking the bushes and wrangling free items from local businesses in an effort to keep the coaches fat and happy. To all of you who have volunteered your time to work in concession or in the hospitality room, THANK YOU!

If this is your wrestler’s first district tournament, here are the basics:

There are ten teams in our district:

  • Hagerty
  • Deland
  • Lake Brantley
  • Lake Howell
  • Lake Mary
  • Lyman
  • Oviedo
  • Seminole
  • University (Orange City)
  • Winter Springs

This tournament is a double-elimination, individually bracketed tournament similar to the Clash of the Titans, Bill Scott Memorial, Michael P. Hutchins Tournament, and the Flagler Rotary Invitational.

The top four wrestlers (1st-4th) in each weight class advance to next week’s Regional Tournament.

Our team earns points based on how our wrestlers do:

  • 2 team advancement points shall be scored for each match won in the championship bracket, except for the final first-place match. If a wrestler receives a bye in a round where at least one match is wrestled, he shall be awarded 2 advancement points for that bye if he wins his next match after the bye.
  • 1 team advancement point shall be scored for each match won in the consolation elimination, except for the final third and fifth place matches. A wrestler who has received a bye in a consolation round where at least one match is wrestled shall receive one advancement point for that bye if he wins his next match after the bye.
  • 2 additional points for each match won by default, disqualification, fall, or forfeit.
  • 1 1/2 points for each match won by technical fall.
  • 1 additional point for each match won by major decision.

Team placement points (tournament scoring 4 places):

  • 1st place 14 team points
  • 2nd place 10 team points
  • 3rd place 7 team points
  • 4th place 4 team points

If your wrestler qualifies for the Regional Tournament:

The team will stay at Quality Inn Orange City 445 S Volusia Ave, Orange City, FL 32763 Friday night.

We will leave Hagerty Friday morning on March 6th at 7:30 AM. Any wrestler who qualifies for the Regional tournament will be labeled as being on a “field trip” for the day. This is an excused absence.

Regional Tournament Schedule:

Friday, March 6th:

10:00 AM Weigh-ins

12:00 PM Round 1

Saturday, March 7th:

8:00 AM Weigh-ins

10:00 AM

12:30 PM Wrestlebacks (Third & Fourth Rounds)

6:00 PM Consolation/Championship Finals (2 mats)

Congratulations to Matt Munroe and Chris Gomez on their 4th place finishes at this past Saturday’s JV State Tournament at Osceola High School. There will be live wrestling in addition to some top notch technique.

The Hagerty Wrestling Report (02.02.15)

Huskies place 4th at Nathan Brouwer Duals

The Huskies (9-4) finished 2-3 this past Saturday at the Nathan Brouwer Duals led by a 4 pin performance from Will Searcy (Sr. 220 lbs.) as well as Scooter Duren (Jr. 160 lbs) who also went 4-1 on the day. Zach Larison went 5 for 5, avenging a loss to Yamil Tapia (Timber Creek) dating back to the consolation semi-finals of the Regional Tournament last year. Three teams ended the day with the same record, but Timber Creek beat both Hagerty & Apopka in their head to head match-ups.

Team finishes:

1st: Winter Springs 5-0

2nd: Lake Mary 4-1

3rd: Timber Creek 2-3

4th: Hagerty 2-3

5th: Apopka 2-3

6th: Lake Brantley 0-5

Hagerty results by round:

Lake Mary 42 Hagerty 27

Hagerty 40 Apopka 38

Winter Springs 53 Hagerty 14

Hagerty 51 Lake Brantley 30

Timber Creek 61 Hagerty 15

With only 26 days and 20 varsity practices left until districts, it is important that the team understands how crucial it is to wrestle sharp throughout the day. We came out flat against Timber Creek and the score reflected that. From here on out, if you are wrestling late into the afternoon on a Saturday that means you are still in the tournament and your season is at stake! It is not the time to come out sluggish or tired. We should be outworking our opponent and scrapping for every point that we can earn.

The Hagerty Wrestling Report (01.26.15)

Defend the Den

Defend the Den

Last Wednesday was our annual rivalry match with Oviedo High School. The Huskies jumped out to a 24-0 lead with pins at 170 lb. (Scooter Duren), 182 (Derek Di Bernardo), 195 (Josh Lopez), and 220 (Will Searcy). The Lions closed to 24-10 with a pin at 106 & a major decision of Brandon Boyle at 113 lbs. Eric Nordahl earned a major decision of his own to put the Huskies up 28-10. After giving up a pin at 126 lbs, Zach Larison (132) and Matt Munroe (138) pinned their opponents to increase our lead to 40-16. Oviedo would go on to pin at 145, 152, & 160 to knot the score up at 40-40.

After 14 matches, both teams had 6 pins and 2 major decisions. Eventually, the match was decided by tiebreaker criteria H: The team having the greater number (total match points) of first point(s) shall be declared the winner.  We scored the first takedown in 9 of the 14 matches, giving us the 41-40 victory! Our guys battled extremely tough and showed the fruits of our hard work in the practice room.

MPH The Team

Front row (L-R): Demarco Diaz (4th), Brandon Boyle, Will Searcy (3rd), Josh Lopez (3rd), Scooter Duren (2nd), Zach Larison (1st), Tyler McVay (4th) Back row (L-R): Matt Munroe, Evan Wright, Ethan Kaufmann, Derek Di Bernardo (1st)

Over the past several weeks, I challenged our guys to focus on some key areas:

  • Scoring the first takedown.
  • Finishing every period on top.
  • Not having any stalling calls against us in a match.
  • Taking their predetermined goal for legitimate shot attempts (leg attacks with a set-up) in a match

I assured them that if we focused on improving in these areas, the wins would take care of themselves. This past Saturday, the varsity had 7 wrestlers reach the podium at the Michael P Hutchins Invitational held at Bishop Moore High School. More important than the medalists and the team scores was the WAY that we scored points. We earned bonus points by either pinning or majoring our opponent in 17 out of 25 victories. If you wrestle aggressively and actively work to score points, you will not only wrestle well, but have fun doing it. Scoring points is fun!

MPH

Individual results:

  • 106: Tyler McVay went 2-2 and placed 4th
  • 113: Brandon Boyle: 0-2

  • 126: Zach Larison went 3-0 and placed 1st. Zach was also awarded the Michael P Hutchins Award for Most Outstanding Wrestler
  • 132: Matt Munroe went 0-2
  • 145: Chris Soto: 0-2
  • 152: Evan Wright: 0-2
  • 160: Scooter Duren went 2-1 and placed 2nd
  • 170: Derek Di Bernardo went 3-0 and placed 1st.
  • 182: Josh Lopez went 4-1 and placed 3rd
  • 220: Will Searcy went 5-1 to place 3rd. Will avenged his loss in the quarterfinals to defeat the same opponent in the Consolation Finals 1-0.

Hagerty’s Annual Husky 5k will be Saturday, Feb. 7th, 2015. This is a great event and is always a fun way to interact with your fellow Huskies! Click here to register online at the HHS Athletic Booster Club’s website.

Each wrestler is responsible for finding a participant for this event. Your wrestler can either:

  1. Run in the event themselves. I’m running in this! I’m sure with enough pressure (and brownies), we can convince Coach Butler to run in it as well. We will have some sort of award for fastest, slowest, and most creative costume for the wrestlers who run in this event.
  2. Convince YOU or another family member/friend to run.
  3. Donate the $25 entry fee
