The Hagerty Wrestling Report (01.12.15)

Weekly Re-cap:

Last Wednesday the JV defeated New Smyrna Beach 36-12 and Colonial 30-15 to bring their overall record to 6-2.

On Friday & Saturday, the team traveled to Flagler Palm Coast to compete in the 29th Annual Flagler Palm Coast Rotary Invitational. This tournament was loaded with state qualifiers, placers, and champions in almost every single weight class. It was a great test to see where our guys stacked up to the best wrestlers in the state. All in all, there were 10 teams who finished in the top 20 in the state at their classification in the state tournament.

UCF Camp

Both varsity and JV are expected to attend the UCF Holiday Camp. Just because we are out of school does not mean that we are out of season. This is a great chance for young wrestlers to gain invaluable mat time and for our experienced wrestlers to sharpen their skills against some of the best wrestlers in Central Florida.

If your wrestler hasn’t already turned in their $10 for camp registration, please send it with them tomorrow. If your wrestler needs a ride, please let me know and I will either meet them at Hagerty or match them up with a teammate who can transport them.

Please visit the following link to help your wrestler with our annual team fundraiser activity: https://www.reachingourgoal.com/GJHKME. The good news: We are not attempting to sell anything to you or your family members that they do not want. By simply providing the email addresses of your friends and family we will actually be giving them coupons that are accepted nationwide and can be used almost anywhere in the country. Last season we raised over $2500 for our team which went towards the purchase of new uniforms, travel costs, and equipment. Please help our team by providing 5-10 email addresses so that Reaching Our Goal can get them their coupons.

UCF Camp

Over the upcoming winter break, our team will be participating in the University of Central Florida’s Holiday Intensive Wrestling Camp. This is a great opportunity for your wrestler to train with one of the top NCWA teams in the country!
The cost of this camp is $200. The more wrestlers that participate, the cheaper the camp will be! If 20 wrestlers sign up, then the cost of the camp will only be $10 per wrestler, or $2.10 per hour of camp! This is a wonderful opportunity for our team to train with FL’s top wrestlers and coaches and get some quality mat time as well. Please send $10 with your wrestler (if you and your family will be in town over the break) by this Thursday. If you are leaving town, please let me know your holiday plans.

The Hagerty Wrestling Report (12.01.14)

The Huskies went 1-1 in their scrimmage against Apopka & Lake Mary, defeating the Blue Darters 39-36 and falling to the Rams 45-30.

Jeanette Searcy took some AMAZING pictures! You can view the album online at https://www.facebook.com/jpsearcy under the album “Hagerty HS wrestling 2014.” If you are looking for someone to do portraits and senior pictures, she is one of the best!

This week at a glance:

Wednesday (12.03.14): JV Quad vs. Lake Mary, Lyman, & Winter Springs (HOME)

  • Weigh-ins: 3:00 PM
  • Wrestling begins: 4:00 PM

Saturday (12.06.14): JV & VARSITY at Orange City University

  • 7:30 AM: Arrive at Orange City University
    • The address for the school is  1000 Rhode Island, Orange City, FL 32763
  • 8:00 AM: Weigh-ins
  • 10:00 AM: Round 1
  • 12:30 PM: Semi-finals
  • 6:00 PM: Finals
  • Please note that all times are approximate.
  • If this is your first tournament, here are some helpful tips. If any “veteran” parents have any additional advice, please chime in on the “Comments” section!
    • Bring a comfy cushion. Bleachers are hard and unforgiving.
    • The meets, and especially the tournaments, can be long and tiring, so the first and most important thing for a spectator is to be comfortable. Wear casual clothes; take a cushion, comfortable shoes, things to snack on and perhaps something to occupy your time between rounds at tournaments; a newspaper, a good book, knitting, crossword puzzles, etc. High School wrestling duals are a little easier to handle because the time element is much shorter. Casual clothes and a cushion should get you through.
    • Tournaments run from several hours to a couple of days depending on the number of teams involved and the setup of the tournament. Being comfortable is primary to having a good time. Casual clothes, good shoes and a cushion are a must. This is probably the best time to get to know the other parents and their families. Many friendships can be built at these tournaments and a sense of team unity begins to grow.

    • Tournament prices vary from free to $5.00 per adult. Participating wrestlers always get in free. Tournament shirts are sold at most tournaments. Prices range from $8.00 to $15.00, depending on the type and style of shirt.

    • Wrestlers need to take casual clothes, shower gear, snacks, and money. Snacks can consist of a wide variety of foods, from sandwiches to dry cereal, raisins, fruit, yogurt, and pasta. Drinks can range from bottled water, fruit juices to sports drinks. Our coaches request that the wrestlers bring healthy foods instead of junk foods to eat. Some parents like to bring things for the other wrestlers parents to snack on.

    • Parents are encouraged to participate in these types of activities as it increases our crowds at tournaments and the coaches are always seeking the support of parents at their son’s meets and tournaments.

The Hagerty Wrestling Report (11.24.14)

Dear fans,

The wait is finally over! The regular high school season has arrived. I for one and super excited to see what this season has in store for us. We have a great mix of returners with varsity experience and new faces on the team who are eager to make an impact for us.

Congratulations need to go out to several wrestlers on our team: Zach Larison has signed his National Letter of Intent to wrestle at Campbell University next season and Matt Medla just found out last week that he has been accepted to the Air Force Academy on a full ROTC scholarship. Way to go guys! Also, Class of 2014 graduate Dan Reilly has signed his paperwork and ships off to join the Navy in January. Please make sure you congratulate these young men if and when you see them around.

Please welcome Steven Butler to the Husky coaching staff. Coach Butler brings a wealth of experience from both his high school and collegiate wrestling career. His impact is already being felt in the wrestling room.

Butler

This Week at a Glance:

Monday (11.24.14):

  • Normal practice hours (3:00-5:30 PM)

Tuesday (11.25.14): Preseason Classic at Lake Mary High School

The Huskies will wrestle twice (one match against Lake Mary and another against Apopka). This is a preseason event and is a way for us as coaches to evaluate the strengths and areas of improvement for our team. Please note that since it is a preseason event we are only allowed to wrestle twice. One of the great problems we have this season is that we have several wrestlers in a weight class. This does mean that your wrestler might not get a chance to compete Tuesday night. We are currently in the process of working out the depth chart at particular weights.

Schedule for Tuesday’s events:

  • 2:30 PM: Wrestlers meet in the Wrestling Room for MANDATORY minimum weight certification
  • 4:00 PM: Bus departs for Lake Mary
  • 5:00 PM: Weigh-ins
  • 6:00 PM: First dual

Wednesday (11.26.14): Morning Practice

  • 9:00-11:30 AM

Thursday (11.27.14): Thanksgiving: NO PRACTICE

  • 12:30 PM: Bears vs. Lions
  • 4:30 PM: Eagles vs. Cowboys
  • 8:30 PM: Seahawks vs. 49ers

Friday (11.28.14): +1 Practice

  • 9:00-11:00 AM: Attending this practice is optional. So is being a champion.

The season is almost here!

690[1]

Dear fans,

The 2014-2015 season is almost here! I just wanted to provide a quick update letting you know about a few date changes regarding the season:

  • The first official day of practice is November 10th. If you haven’t already, please get your wrestler’s “Blue Card” renewed for this year. If your wrestler is currently playing a sport, they should already have this. If not, then they will need to get a new sports physical and complete all the necessary paperwork. Any athlete without a Blue Card will not be allowed to practice until they get one.
  • Preseason strength & conditioning and open mats are currently going on. We lift every Monday, Tuesday, & Thursday starting at 3:30 PM in the Weight Room. Open mats are every Tuesday & Thursday immediately following our lift.

Fight Knight at the Southeast Regional Training Center:

UCF FNF These Friday nights with UCF Wrestling are a great opportunity for your wrestler to get some quality mat time and experience! The UCF Wrestling team will put your athlete through a warm up and run “live” wrestling matches. This is a perfect chance to get the 40+ matches that I challenged each wrestler to get during the offseason. They run every Friday night until the start of the regular season. There are only 6 left, so make sure you take advantage!

Letter from Coach Cherenfant

Dear Huskies,
It has been a pleasure to have coached this team for the past five years.  I’ve had the privilege of working with a great coaching staff, awesome parents who volunteer their time and efforts, and young wrestlers who took on the challenge of giving “one more.”  Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to watch some of you grow into responsible young men who have excelled outside of the wrestling room. It is with a heavy heart that I am sharing with you all that I have accepted a teaching position at Chancery High School in Orange County and I am no longer going to be the assistant coach of the Hagerty Huskies wrestling team. I would like to thank the team, Coach Cabal, the parents, and the fans, for having given me the opportunity to coach and also mold young lives inside and outside of the wrestling room. Once again I thank you and I am extremely grateful for the time that I have spent here.
Sincerely,
Frito Cherenfant
