Tiger Style Training Camp

Dear fans,

The 2nd Tiger Style Training Camp will be hosted at Hagerty again this June 18-21. If you haven’t already registered your wrestler, you can do so at www.tinyurl.com/TigerStyleFL. The rate for our team is $125, due the first day of camp. This camp WILL sell out and we want to keep the counselor to camper ratio low so please lock in your spot by registering as soon as possible. This camp is a great opportunity to learn from Coach Brian Smith and to pick the brains of national champion J’Den Cox as well as All-Americans Drake Houdashelt and Alan Waters.

We are hoping that with the number of experienced wrestlers on our team, we can place well in tournaments and make a great run at a conference and district title, not to mention place well at the regional and state tournament. However, the saying “Summer wrestling makes winter champions” has always been true.

Just a reminder that offseason practices are held every Tuesday & Thursday from 2:00-4:00 PM!

We all have dreams. But in order to make dreams come into reality, it takes an awful lot of determination, dedication, self-discipline, and effort.

The Importance of Offseason Wrestling

Image

I’d like to share the following passage from Dr. Bruce Gabrielson’s article titled, The Value of Off-Season Wrestling:

Wrestling is not an easy sport, and there are few natural winners. Paying your dues with sweat and some disappointments are to be expected. Like any other sport, success requires a commitment from both the athlete, and, in the case of younger wrestlers, plenty of active support from their parents. No rides to practice or competitions, no money for shoes, dues, or entry fees, and parental pressure to devote 100% to a different spring sport (such as baseball or track) will guarantee failure.

It is a great article and the principles contained within are applicable to pretty much any scenario in which you want to be successful. To read the full article (which I highly recommend for both wrestlers AND parents), visit http://www.smwc.org/tips/sumwres.html.

As the school year wraps up, I wanted to take a minute to stress the following areas which are critical to our success as a program:

  1. Skill Development
  2. Strength
  3. Conditioning

SKILL DEVELOPMENT:

The summer is a perfect opportunity to learn, practice, and apply new wrestling moves in a low stress environment. We are hosting the University of Missouri for a wrestling camp June 18-21. Coach Brian Smith will be bringing along 2014 National Champion J’Den Cox as well as All-Americans Drake Houdashelt and Alan Waters

PLEASE MAKE PLANS FOR YOUR WRESTLER TO ATTEND THIS CAMP. It’s going to be RIGHT HERE in our own gym! To apply or view the brochure, please visit www.tinyurl.com/TigerStyleFL

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING:

Summer workouts will be every Tuesday & Thursday from 2:00-4:00 PM. We will show technique, drill, and wrestle live and then head to the weight room for the strength and conditioning portion of our practice.

I look forward to working with you and your wrestler to continue Hagerty Wrestling’s tradition of excellence!

Calling All Golfers!

Image

Do you know what I just saw? A gopher. Do you know what gophers can do to a golf course?

Dear Fans,

The 9th Annual HHS Athletic Booster Club is Saturday, April 26th. Fortunately for you all, Coach Cherenfant & I will be taking a group of wrestlers to George Jenkins HS for the AAU State Championship so we will spare you the embarrassment of getting smoked by us on the golf course.

From the most experienced duffer to the most novice hack, come out and enjoy the Florida weather with your fellow Huskies!

The team is looking to fill the following needs:

  • Foursome (you can play as a free agent for $75 or create your own foursome for $280).
  • Hole sponsor ($100): Your company will get its own sign at a hole.

If you can help in any of these capacities, please let me know. Registration forms can be found online.

If your wrestler isn’t currently involved in an extra-curricular activity, get them off the couch and into a sport! Track, weightlifting, and spring football are all in session and your athlete needs to be doing something to stay active and maintain the strength and conditioning they gained during wrestling season.

Please RSVP by either replying to this email. Thank you!

The Hagerty Wrestling Report (02.10.14)

Fans,

Our three regional qualifiers battled tough this past weekend, with two of our wrestlers falling one match short of becoming state qualifiers. Sophomores Scooter Duren and Ethan Kaufmann wrestled ALL SENIORS! Ethan knocked off a District Champ and State Qualifier in the first round and then defeated another senior in the quarters to wrestle the reigning conference champ in the semis. In the wrestle back round, Ethan had to wrestle yet another senior, losing a very close 5-3 decision. Ethan finished this year SAC Runner up and 4th in the District. Scooter wrestled a senior district runner up in the first round before defeating another senior in his first wrestle back. Unfortunately, he ran into a returning State Qualifier in wrestle back round 2 and was unable to fight off the pin. He finishes this season 3rd in the SAC as well as the District. Zach compiled a record of 3-2 over the weekend, losing a hard fought takedown in overtime in the match to qualify. He finishes the season with a 3rd place finish at the TOC and a SAC & District runner-up.

This off-season:

Your wrestler should get out there and participate in another sport! Track & weightlifting seasons are currently going on and either one of those are a GREAT opportunity to improve as an athlete. The skills learned in both sports transfer over to wrestling. Get your athlete off the couch and into a spring sport. Contact Coach Rutledge (Room 03-211B) for weightlifting and Coach Malkovich (Portable 1) or Coach Getty (Room 03-108/Athletic Office) for track. If a wrestler is not involved in a spring sport then they are expected to participate in offseason strength & conditioning for wrestling.

Banquet:

More information about our banquet will be made available soon.

We are proud of ALL of the wrestlers who worked hard this season and cannot wait to start preparing for next year! Thank you all for your support and GO HUSKIES!

The Road to Lakeland Continues!

Dear fans,

THANK YOU so much for the total team effort that went into running such an amazing tournament! Coaches, wrestlers, and fans all commented on how smoothly the tournament ran and that is a credit to the wonderful support system we have here at Hagerty High School. Thanks to Dr. Williams for showing her support on Saturday as well as our Athletic Director Jay Getty for managing the immense amount of paperwork that comes with hosting Districts. Dale DiBernardo & Ken Larison‘s computer wizardry kept the tournament running swiftly and the efforts of Tammy DiBernardo & Ana Larison in coordinating the hospitality room kept all of the coaches, table workers, and officials happy! Finally, to all of our volunteers and contributors, THANK YOU! Many hands make light work.
