I’d like to share the following passage from Dr. Bruce Gabrielson’s article titled, The Value of Off-Season Wrestling:
Wrestling is not an easy sport, and there are few natural winners. Paying your dues with sweat and some disappointments are to be expected. Like any other sport, success requires a commitment from both the athlete, and, in the case of younger wrestlers, plenty of active support from their parents. No rides to practice or competitions, no money for shoes, dues, or entry fees, and parental pressure to devote 100% to a different spring sport (such as baseball or track) will guarantee failure.
It is a great article and the principles contained within are applicable to pretty much any scenario in which you want to be successful. To read the full article (which I highly recommend for both wrestlers AND parents), visit http://www.smwc.org/tips/sumwres.html.
As the school year wraps up, I wanted to take a minute to stress the following areas which are critical to our success as a program:
- Skill Development
- Strength
- Conditioning
SKILL DEVELOPMENT:
The summer is a perfect opportunity to learn, practice, and apply new wrestling moves in a low stress environment. We are hosting the University of Missouri for a wrestling camp June 18-21. Coach Brian Smith will be bringing along 2014 National Champion J’Den Cox as well as All-Americans Drake Houdashelt and Alan Waters.
PLEASE MAKE PLANS FOR YOUR WRESTLER TO ATTEND THIS CAMP. It’s going to be RIGHT HERE in our own gym! To apply or view the brochure, please visit www.tinyurl.com/TigerStyleFL
STRENGTH & CONDITIONING:
Summer workouts will be every Tuesday & Thursday from 2:00-4:00 PM. We will show technique, drill, and wrestle live and then head to the weight room for the strength and conditioning portion of our practice.
I look forward to working with you and your wrestler to continue Hagerty Wrestling’s tradition of excellence!
