“There is a light at the end of the road.”

Week 15. Practice #60-65. We are finally here, the last week before the official start of the FHSAA State Series. Districts is the first step for our wrestlers’ goal of winning an individual State Championships. Everyone’s record is reset to 0-0 and every Saturday from here on out becomes WIN or GO HOME. I cannot think of a more exciting time to be a coach than during next few weeks!

JV State Championships Re-cap:

Our 1st & 2nd year underclassmen wrestlers competed at the JV State Tournament in Osceola HS. One lesson all of the wrestlers took from this experience is how important it is to fight for every point, be it a takedown, escape, reversal, or turn. As a team, it is our mission to wrestle as “hostile” as possible when we are on the mat.

  • Eric Nordahl (Fr): 2-2
  • Alex Martinez (So): 0-2
  • Robert Beattie (So): 0-2
  • Patrick Hicks (Fr): 0-2
  • Ben Bacosa (Fr): 1-2

This Week at a Glance:

Mon. (01.27.14): Regular practice 3:00-5:00 PM

Tue. (01.28.14): Regular practice 3:00-5:00 PM

Wed. (01.29.14): Regular practice 3:00-5:00 PM

Thu. (01.30.14): Regular practice 3:00-5:00 PM

FRI. (01.31.14): EVENING PRACTICE 7:30-9:00 PM

  • We will need to set up the Gym for Saturday’s District 3 Wrestling Tournament after the Boy’s basketball game.
  • We should be finished setting up the GYM no later than 10:30 PM. Please plan accordingly with your wrestler and help ensure that they arrive to practice on time and are available to set up. We will be setting up three mats in the Main Gym, which is half of what we needed to do for the Rouse Invitational. If any wrestler needs a ride home after practice, please let me know and Coach Cherenfant or myself will take them home.

Seminole Athletic Conference Tournament Recap:

The Huskies placed 5th as a team at this past Saturday’s SAC tournament and placed 6 out of 9 wrestlers, improving on our 6th place finish last year (with only 2 placers). While we are happy with the results, we are still not satisfied. There were a few matches where we left points out on the mat and didn’t always capitalize when the opportunity arose. As a team, we’ll learn from this tournament and use the positive momentum the next week and a half leading up to the District tournament.

This Week at a Glance:

  • Regular practice times all this week: 3:00 PM-5:00 PM
  • Saturday, Jan. 25: JV State Tournament
    • Coach Cherenfant will be taking our first & second year wrestlers (underclassmen only) to the JV State Tournament at Osceola: Ben Bacosa (Fr. 138 lbs), Robert Beattie (So. 134 lbs.), Nick Hart (Fr. 122 lbs), Patrick Hicks (Fr. 128 lb), Alex Martinez (So. 134 lb), & Eric Nordahl (Fr. 108 lb).
      • 6:15 AM: Meet in front of the Gym
      • 6:30 AM: Leave for Osceola HS
      • 8:00 AM: Weigh-ins
      • 9:00 AM: Round 1 begins

WE NEED YOUR HELP!

Hagerty has been selected to host the Class 3A District 2 Tournament Saturday, Feb. 1. If anyone is available to help work a table as a clock operator or serve in the Concession Stand, please let me or Tammy Di Bernardo (tammydibo80@usasia-fl.com) know ASAP. We are also in need of items for the hospitality room, just like when we hosted the Rouse Invitational. If you can help in any (or all) of these capacities, please let me know.

Our team has been working hard this past summer, fall, and winter preparing for the REAL season: the FHSAA State Series! The District tournament is the first step in reaching our goal of winning a state championship. Can’t wait!

The Hagerty Wrestling Report (01.17.14)

The Huskies wrap up a busy week of competition this Saturday at Oviedo High School with the Seminole Athletic Conference tournament.

Weekly recap:

  • The Huskies finished in 13th place at last Saturday’s Ron Peters Tournament of Champions. Congratulations to Junior Zach Larison for finishing in 3rd place. We had a number of our wrestlers show improvement at this tournament and we definitely wrestled better at Lake Mary than at Lyman Holiday Invitational. Freshman Matt Munroe (113 lb.), sophomores Curtis “Scooter” Duren (152 lb.), Ethan Kaufmann (170 lb.), and junior Will Searcy were all close to qualifying for the medal rounds. Not surprisingly, the wrestlers who showed the most improvement were also the ones who consistently came to practice over the winter break. Their conditioning and technique never looked better.
  • This past Wednesday, the team went 2-0 in dual meet competition, defeating Pine Ridge 48-36 and Orlando University 48-28. Our dual meet record is 10-10 on the year.
  • As a team, we are happy, but not satisfied with our performance this week. As we head into the SAC tournament this week, we have a specific set of goals in mind:
    1. Improve on last year’s 6th place finish and 2 medalists.
    2. Everyone on the team wins at least one match and scores points for the team.
    3. Wrestle at or above your seed.
    4. Get the bonus: Win by pin, technical fall, or major decision.

The Hagerty Wrestling Report (01.07.14)

Welcome back & Happy New Year!

We had a small, dedicated group of wrestlers take advantage of the break and work hard to improve. For those wrestlers that were travelling, I hope you stayed active. These next few weeks are crucial as the team prepares for the postseason.

Image

Counting today, there are 18 guaranteed practices until the District Tournament. Any practices after that will have to be EARNED because if you’re still practicing in February, then that means you’ve qualified for the Regional tournament.

Here are the goals for our wrestlers this month:

  1. Weekly 100: Wrestlers need to hit 100 takedowns before or after practice. Practice doesn’t make perfect, it makes permanent. Drilling good shots in practice leads to good shots in competition.
  2. 12:00 +1: Stay after practice for 12:00 each day to turn your weakness(es) into your strengths. If you can’t get off of bottom, then stay after and become the type of wrestle who can’t be held down. If you do this every day that amounts to an extra hour of practice time that your competition isn’t getting in.

This Week at a Glance:

Tue (01.07.14):

  • Practice 3:00-5:00 PM

Wed (01.08.14): JV match at Timber Creek has been cancelled

  • Practice 3:00-5:00 PM

Thu (01.09.14):

  • Practice 3:00-5:00 PM

  • 3:00 PM: Weigh-ins
  • 4:30 PM: Round 1
  • 7:00 PM: Round 2
  • 9:00 PM: Consolation Round 1

Sat (01.11.14): Varsity at Lake Mary Tournament of Champions

Good luck to the varsity tomorrow & Saturday as we head to the 40th Annual Lyman Holiday Invitational. Dear fans,

Thank you again for taking the time to volunteer for the 3rd Annual Johnny Rouse Invitational! Everyone’s hard work in the concession stand and hospitality room was evident and all of the coaches and officials expressed their gratitude towards making our tournament such a joy to attend. A big thanks to Dale DiBernardo & Ken Larison for directing our tournament and Tammy DiBernardo for coordinating the hospitality room.

  3. DP 42 HHS 30
  4. HHS 72 SEM 18
  5. HHS 72 SEM 18
  6. HHS 51 MEL 30

Individual Results:

Several freshmen stepped up and wrestled varsity for us this weekend. Eric Nordahl (113 lbs.) went 1-0, Derek DiBernardo (170) went 2-0, and Matt Monroe (113) finished the day 4-0 with 2 pins and was named the team’s Most Outstanding Wrestler. Andrew Alvarez (Fr., 152), Cole Cook (Fr., 285) and sophomore Lane Miller (195) filled in for the team so we wouldn’t have to surrender any forfeits. Zach Larison (126 lbs.) and Scooter Duren (160 lbs.) both finished the day 5-0. All in all it was a great learning experience for our younger wrestlers and a big test for our upperclassmen. The team’s dual meet record is currently 8-10. We have a chance of finishing the season with a winning record. We wrestle 3 more dual meets in January and MUST win all three to finish 11-10. We need to commit to working hard over the winter break in order to accomplish this.

The Hagerty Wrestling Report (12.09.13)

Huskies go 4-1 at Shark Duals, place 3rd.

Last week the guys focused on maintaining the pace and forcing the action throughout the whole match and finishing matches with bonus points. We let a dual slip away by letting our opponents off of their back and giving up major decisions.

The other thing we’ve been trying to stress to our wrestlers is the importance of scoring first. We fight hard for good positioning and attacking our opponent’s stance and we want to fight like crazy if our opponent gets to our legs.

Consider the following:

  • Against Westwood, we scored the first takedown 9 times and won 56-18. Wrestlers who scored first in the match ended up winning 9 out of 10 matches.
  • Against Melbourne, we scored the first takedown 9 times and won 44-30. The wrestler who scored first won 10 out of 11 matches.
  • Against Vero Beach, we earned 7 first takedowns and won 48-30. Wrestlers were 8-1 when they scored first.
  • Against Port St. Lucie, we earned 4 first takedowns and lost the dual 49-28. The wrestler who scored first won 6 out of 8 matches.
  • In the third place match, we scored first in 9 matches and won 52-27. The wrestler who scored first in the match won 10 out of 10 matches.

Key highlights for the Huskies:

Zach Larison (Jr., 126 lbs.), Derek DiBernardo (Fr., 170 lbs.), and Ethan Kaufmann (So., 182 lbs.) all went a perfect 5-0 on the day. Senior Dan Reilly (113 lbs.) was 1-0 until his broken finger caused him to injury default in our match against Melbourne.

Luke Franco (Jr., 120 lbs.), Rodney Shaw (Jr., 132 lbs.), Zach Turner (Jr., 138 lbs.), Scooter Duren (So., 160 lbs.), and Will Searcy (Jr., 220 lbs.) all finished the day 4-1. Great job, guys!

The team improved its record to 5-7 and looks to improve its record this week at Oviedo this Thursday and at our own 3rd Annual Johnny Rouse Invitational this Saturday.

This Week at a Glance:

  • Mon. (12.09.13): Practice 3:00-5:30 PM
  • Tue. (12.10.13): Practice 3:00-5:30 PM
  • Wed (12.11.13): Practice 3:00-5:30 PM
  • Thu (12.12.13): Practice 3:00-4:00 PM
    • 4:30 PM: Leave for Oviedo
    • 5:00 PM: Weigh-ins
    • 6:00 PM: Wrestling begins
  • Fri (12.13.13): PRACTICE 6:00-8:30 PM
    • Please note the time change here. The Lady Huskies play a home basketball game Friday night so we will not be able to set up the gym until after the varsity game is finished.
  • Sat (12.14.13):
    • 7:00 AM: JV AND Varsity wrestlers report to finish setting up the gym.
    • 8:00 AM: Weigh-ins
    • 9:00 AM: Wrestling begins

Thanks for all your support and come out to Oviedo this Thursday! GO HUSKIES! BEAT OVIEDO!

Match recap against Seminole & University

Husky wrestling fans,

The good news is the team picked up its first win of the season against Seminole, 48-18. The team wrestled well in our win against Seminole and we showed tonight that once our lineup is set the way it should be we will be a tough team to beat. The bad news is we dropped a very winnable dual against University, 46-25. Individual mistakes, forfeits due to missed weight, and a lack of preparation ended up costing us the dual. We as a team have to learn to put guys away once we have them on their back and to commit to fighting off of our backs if we find ourselves in that situation.
